Most AI pilots fail for boring reasons
When a pilot quietly dies, the post-mortem rarely mentions accuracy. It mentions that the person who championed it moved on, that the output landed in a system nobody checks, or that the process around it never changed to make room for the new capability.
The pattern repeats across sectors. A team selects an impressive demonstration rather than an expensive problem. Nobody defines what success would look like in numbers. The tool is introduced alongside the existing manual process instead of replacing a step within it, so it becomes extra work.
The remedy is unglamorous. Choose a use-case with a named owner who feels the pain personally. Agree the measurement before the build — cycle time, cost per transaction, error rate. Change the process at the same time as the tooling, and retire the step you are replacing.
A pilot that improves one measurable number by a defensible margin is worth more to your organisation than five demonstrations that impressed the board.
